e23: From Artistic Creation to Aesthetic Reception

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024

18:30-20:00 GMT (London, UK) • 1:30-3:00pm EST (North America, Eastern)

In this session we will discuss the mirror model – which posits that art making and art viewing are mirror of each other.

How can we better understand the interface between when a creative idea is conceived and generated and afterwards, how it is experienced by the viewer? This paper critiques both processes. The art making process can be viewed from initialisation to expansion and adaption and then to finalising. While the aesthetic experience may mirror this.

From this session we will discuss questions such as; how can we map the mirror model to our own experiences, can the proposed mirror model of aesthetics be applied to other art forms – music, theatre? By having a better understanding of art realisation and art experiences, we can make better meaning of our own experiences whether as a researcher, arts practitioner or viewer.

We will use the following paper as a guide for our thoughtful discussion:

This meeting has passed, but we would love for you to join us next time!
